The exact origins of "Lament of the Highborne" have been lost to antiquity. Certainly the melody pre-dates the War of the Ancients, in which the song served as a lament for the fallen: a tribute to their steadfast bravery against overwhelming odds. Millennia later, the high elves of Quel'Thalas sang the lament, largely unaltered, in the Troll Wars. Here, too, the elves ultimately proved victorious, but they would not remain so. A plague of undeath swept through the human nation of Lordaeron in the Third War and converted many citizens into mindless undead minions of the Lich King. This army--the Scourge--invaded elven lands and decimated the populace, some of whom were raised into undeath and forced to join the Scourge.
As leader of the last elven defenders, Sylvanas Windrunner suffered a terrible fate: her spirit was ripped from her body and transformed into a banshee. When the Lich King's power faltered, however, she and other undead were freed of Scourge control. She has since reclaimed her body and become queen of these undead rebels, the Forsaken. Although her heart is full of bitterness, she cannot forget the people she once loved... the kingdom she gave her life to defend.
“上层精灵的挽歌”最早的起源已不可考，但肯定在上古之战之前便已出现，那场战争中，精灵们传唱这首歌以讼念那些勇敢抗争强大怪物的牺牲者。许多年以后，奎尔萨拉斯的高等精灵们在与巨魔的战斗中同样唱起了这首歌；最终他们也获得了胜利，但喜悦没能保持多久。三次大战到来，不死军团散播的瘟疫弥漫在人类王国洛丹伦的土地上，许多人被转化成了巫妖王的亡灵爪牙，并组成了天灾军团侵入了精灵的领地，造成了大量伤亡。
风行者希尔瓦纳斯作为精灵防御力量的领导，遭受了悲惨的命运，她的灵魂被撕裂，变成了女妖。后来她和一部分亡灵趁巫妖王虚弱的时候脱离了天灾军团的控制。她夺回了自己的身体，成为了这群亡灵反叛者“被遗忘者”的领袖。虽然希尔瓦纳斯的内心被怨恨充斥，但她仍忘不了她曾经深爱过的精灵们，和那个她用生命来保卫的王国。
可以看到，高等精灵的命运是悲惨和无奈的，《燃烧远征》音乐赏析第2期的主打歌曲——《燃烧远征》专辑中的最后一首曲目——《高等精灵的挽歌》（《Lament of the Highbourne》）正是对这一群悲惨而绝望种族的悼词及挽歌。事实上，《Lament of the Highbourne》是一本记载有同名歌曲歌词的书。歌词由Thalassian（萨拉斯语）写成，而歌曲则是由著名的希尔瓦娜斯（相信各位魔兽的玩家对她不会陌生）领唱，由她的众多高等精灵女妖（Banshees）伴唱。
歌曲在合唱声以及弦乐的拨弦声中拉开了帷幕，女妖们神秘的嗓音完美的为领唱的出现作好了足够的铺垫。
随后，“Anar'alah, Anar'alah belore”（译文：“By the light, by the light of the sun”）美丽和神秘的声音飘出，将每一个听众带入回了那个破碎的年代。
0：21-0:24的部分是和弦变化极其有效果的安排，这里，歌词唱出“Sin'dorei”（即“血精灵”），而音乐和弦在“Rei”这个音节上由前面的非常紧张转为了展开式的和弦，取得了非常好的效果。“Shindu fallah na ”（译文：“Our enemies are breaking through”）描述出当时敌人大举吞噬着高等精灵族的情况。
而在1：01-1：08之间，和声语言逐渐由稀疏转变为饱满，而在1：08时丰富的和声语言则是将曲子推到了一个高潮，“Shindu”（译文：“Falling”）则更是唱出了无助的绝望……
在经过高等精灵女妖（Banshees）整齐而舒缓的合唱之后，歌曲继续反复着“Shindu”（译文：“Falling”）这一句歌词。随后的“fallah na”（译文：“They are breaking through”）直接的描写出当燃烧军团大举侵蚀高等精灵时的压抑与恐怖而又无可奈何，只能眼睁睁的看着自己的同伴被吞噬的绝望景象。这里，我们听到歌曲演绎者并没有把这一悲惨的歌词演绎得声泪涕下，转而是一种相对较平和的声音来演绎，更是显得了高等精灵在极度绝望后的一种麻木的状态。在反复吟唱了多次相同的歌词后，歌曲最后在极其少见的，不和谐的和弦中收了尾，似乎代表着血精灵没有尽头的未来，也留给了我们无限的遐想空间。歌曲中反复了出现“Sin'dorei”（译文“Children of the Blood”）这一句歌词，突出了血精灵这一高等精灵种族的转化后裔，也更是突出了《燃烧远征》的新特色。
值得我们推敲的是，歌曲中反复出现的“Sin'dorei”，以及“Shindu fallah na ”。歌曲如此多次数的出现了燃烧军团吞噬高等精灵的描述，可以得知，这首悼词除了是对死难的同伴的哀悼，更是对高等精灵没落以及高等精灵个体人性丧失的哀悼。另外，通过如此多的对战争的描述，我们可以估计，《Lament of the Highbourne》这首歌曲是在银月城（SilverMoon City）陷落后写成的。
“赠希尔瓦娜斯。永远爱你，奥蕾莉亚”……
希尔瓦娜斯在垂目凝视后，又将再一次悲伤地吟唱魔法召唤出四个上层精灵的灵魂，大厅中响起哀婉的歌声：以日光之名，血之子，敌人就要突破防线了……
